Chicago is beautiful in the Spring

Guys…we struck out again.  Six to eight inches of snow on the drive to Michigan City.  Winter is going to last for three more months.  But Springtime awaits and we will go to Chi-town then.  I promise.  Meanwhile enjoy Ground hogs day in Muskegon.  Hopefully you can catch one of those little SOB’s and grill him.  Sorry… Chicago trip cancelled.

Ground Hogs Day Eve in Chicago – A Fat Rat Celebration

OUR TRIP IS ON – to Chicago on Saturday, February 1.

  • We leave Grand Haven at 8:00 AM EST
  • Take the 9:27 AM CST train from Michigan City
  • Arrive downtown 11:00 AM CST
  • Bad weather return trip 6:22 PM CST (arrive Michigan City – 8:12)
  • Back to Muskegon by 11:00 PM.
  • Good weather return trip 9:15 PM CST (arrive Michigan City – 11:05)
  • Back to Muskegon by 1:30 AM.
  • Mr Wood’s tele – (616) 402-8668

OK so we’ve been buried in snow – we were weathered out at Christmas – and it’s been cold as the Yukon since.  Ground hogs day is upon us, and Unknown-1its time for him to see his shadow.  It’s time for us to get out of Oakridge and  go to Chicago.   We meet in Grand Haven (8:00 AM.)  We carpool down to Michigan City, Indiana.    And then we take the Southshore line train into the Windy City ($8.50 one way).  It drops us smak dab in the middle of town – directly under Millennium Park. We head up the stairs and scatter.  Go where you want.  Have a great time.  Meet back at the train – the return time will depend on weather and plans.  We will confirm return time prior to going – so parents will know times before we leave.

WE NEED MORE DRIVERS…if you know somebody who would like to join us please let me know.  Currently we the following open seats…

  • Bob Wood – 4 seats
  • Jeff Lohman – 4 seats
  • Greg Fleenor – 4 seats
  • Michelle Prince – 6 seats

Me and Mr. Lohman and friends always take the El up to our friendly little Thai Restaurant in Lincoln Square; its on the Brown Line  about three miles from Wrigley Field.  We roam around up there for a bit and head over to Andersonville (another cool little neighborhood)…then we take the Blue Line back downtown in the afternoon after it starts to get dark.  We finish with a stroll down Michigan Avenue.

We’ve been doing this for years.  And its a wonderful time…the big difference is that now we must have signed permission slips from parents and we must have adult drivers.  This may complicate things.  We’ve always opened the door for Senior Current Issues students, all of the exchange students, and friends of both groups.  Here’s the catch.  In the past students were allowed to drive if we didn’t have enough adults driving and we did not need permission slips.  Now, students cannot drive and we do need permission slips.

Fortunately, we have drivers this year…I will drive.  Mr. Lohman and Morgan’s step dad Greg Fleenor and Michelle Prince will drive as well.  That gives us  twenty spots. We could use a few more.   If your mom or dad or big sister or brother wants to drive that would be super.  We will have to fill seats in preferencial order –   Senior Current Issues students first.  Oakridge Internationals next.  Friends of the each of the above following…  – so get your parent permission form in and we’ll figure the rides on Friday morning.

SCI 2014 – Take home Final Exam (Guidelines)

Our 2014 Semester One  Final Exam will  encourage reflection on stories taken from the The Sidneys The New Yorker – Top Ten ..for 2013 and links from David Brook’s column (Sidney’s – Part 1 and  Sidney’s – Part 2) in the New York Times that provided me the idea.  You are required to read, reflect, and write on two stories of your choosing.   These are examples of some of the best journalism in the United States today.

What exactly is the Sidney Award

“In 2009, the foundation inaugurated the Sidney, a monthly award for an outstanding piece of socially-conscious journalism.   The Sidney is awarded monthly to a piece published in a magazine, newspaper, on a news site, or a blog in the United States.  Television and radio segments broadcast in the United States are also eligible, as are published photography series.”

What is The New Yorker Magazine…

To put it simply the New Yorker Magazine is very good journalism.  A significant number of the Sidneys are first published in  the New Yorker.  The magazine features award winning authors.  It addresses a wealth of issues global and domestic.  Each year the New Yorker offers its own “Top Ten Stories” of the year.  You’ll be choosing from 2012 and 2013.

Going to College – And not going broke in the process

For Oakridge students and Oakridge parents.

OK – here you go – everything you need to know about taking on the challenge of paying for college, organized into a Blendspace post below.  Please listen to the audioboo podcast  and then read the Introduction TOC of Blendspace.  That should get you comfortable with the post.

Watch the videos with mom and dad.  Organize yourself for this challenge – the earlier the better – roll up your sleeves and jump in.  If you are going to make it in this economy of ours, you’ve got to have some post high school education.  This will get you started and hopefully provide a little inspiration to keep you moving in a positive direction.
