ECON – Exam Honor Roll

Congratulations to the following students who earned an “A” on last weeks Economics Common Unknown-3Assessment.  Well done guys…keep accumulating that Human Capitol…and twenty five years from now you’ll have more than just your waitressing tips to pull out of the piggy bank to try and dent the $235,000 cost to send little junior off to Michigan State University for four years, in order that he achieve a degree in some major that will pay him $35,000 a year when he gets out of college…at least you’re covering half the battle.  Now its on to pitchforks and torches and political representatives who do not consider affordable higher education a basic human right in the richest country on the face of the planet in the history of the world.

Podcasts 1.1 & 1.2 – Intro to Economics

In an effort to improve understanding of key terms I’ll be posting MP3 podcasts of “terms to study” regularly Unknown-2throughout the semester.  These terms will serve as a core for unit comprehension and exams.  Each is also listed in the classroom on the front whiteboard and will be targeted for class discussion.  When I place a numeral that corresponds to a particular class hour next to the term on the front board, I will assume that all students in that particular class hour understands the term.  Any student can veto my decision by a simple veto.   We will continue to work through the definition until that student is comfortable with the term.  However, one the class hour numeral is on the board, quizzes will be drawn from the corresponding term.   All quizzes are two terms 10 point essay answers (twenty point total) and are based on a working understanding of the word; that means you’ll be answering in essay format.  I am also posting audio podcasts of many of them below.  Each podcast is two to five minutes in length.

Quizzes will be often and unannounced.  So it is important for you to review your notes and the below podcasts regularly throughout the semester.  Terms will also serve as a basis for Common Assessments.  Consequently a good way to review for the Common Assessments would be to listen to the podcasts.

Terms in blue have been podcasted. Merely go to the term and you will find the podcast in MP3 format.

Five Broad Economic Goals – A Worksheet

This assignment is due on Monday, October 14.  This assignment is worth 30 points.

Use the large chart that I handed out in class…it is a magnified version of the one found here.

Please re-read pages 25 thru 27 in our Economics text  and inform yourself as to the definitions of the five basic goals of any economic system – do this in your own words.   Also, interpret the definitions in regard to how well each of the economic systems handles each of the five particular goals.  Grade the system on efficiency, equity, freedom, growth, and security with a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F) and then explain in your own words (in the appropriate box) why you gave it the grade that you did.

  1. Efficiency
  2. Equity
  3. Freedom
  4. Growth and Innovation
  5. Security and Predictability

Podcast and Website Essentials

This college funding thing is critical.  And knowledge is power.  With that in mind – it is vital that you thoroughly understand each of the terms listed below.  I’ve created (2:00 to 4:00) audio podcasts on each in order that you might better understand the term.  A related website in red accompanies it.  Also, since this whole college thing is dependent on a team effort between you and your parents, a great way to get moving, would be for you and mom and dad to sit down together and listen to each of the following podcasts.

Whatever way it shakes out, these are the nuts and bolts of what you will need to know.

The Basics when it comes to “Paying for College”
