Focus #2 (GOV) – Origins of American Government

Go here for Focus Question #2 Origins of American Government.  This assignment is due Thursday November 13 at the beginning of class is worth 50 points. 

We are going to dig into the roots of the creation of  American government.  In that process we will look particularly close at the  principles that base the Declaration of Independence.  The Declaration is our founding document.  It’s an inspiring piece of literature.  If we measure our current government to the promises incorporated in that document you’ll find in many ways we continue to come up short;  mostly because of a lack of inspiration on the part of “We the People.”  So lets study the reasons for our separation from England and our written justification for that break…and as always think about how the 14th Amendment will eventually be incorporated into this founding.  Finally weigh the relationship between today’s challenges and the past.  There is much to compare.

Terms / Podcasts for CA#2 – Government – Basic Principles

Use the following podcasts to review for CA #2 – The Principles of Government

In an effort to improve understanding of key terms I’ll be posting MP3 podcasts of “terms to study” regularly throughout the semester.  These terms will serve as a core for unit comprehension and exams.  Each is also listed in the classroom on the front whiteboard and will be targeted for class discussion.  When I place a numeral that corresponds to a particular class hour next to the term on the front board, I will assume that all students in that particular class hour understands the term.  Any student can veto my decision by a simple veto.   We will continue to work through the definition until that student is comfortable with the term.  However, one the class hour numeral is on the board, quizzes will be drawn from the corresponding term.   All quizzes are two terms 10 point essay answers (twenty point total) and are based on a working understanding of the word; that means you’ll be answering in essay format.  I am also posting audio podcasts of many of them below.  Each podcast is two to five minutes in length.

Quizzes will be often and unannounced.  So it is important for you to review your notes and the below podcasts regularly throughout the semester.  Terms will also serve as a basis for Common Assessments.  Consequently a good way to review for the Common Assessments would be to listen to the podcasts.

Terms in blue have been podcasted. Merely go to the term and you will find the podcast in MP3 format.

Civil Rights Podcasts – “Amendment #14, Brown, and Plessy”

BREAKING NEWS – THE TEST WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY – NOT MONDAY – YOU HAVE ENOUGH TO DO IN FINISHING THE ASSIGNMENT

This post will help you on the Civil Rights Movement Exam – listen to the podcasts while you re-write your Timelines into your notes. 

We will use the 14th Amendment as a blueprint for study of the rights endowed to you by your creator.  We will explore the contractual Unknown-2responsibility of the United States government to United States citizens, in regards to protection of those rights, as documented in the Constitution.  You will be tested on memorization and full explanation of section one of Amendment #14.  We will rely on #14 as a foundational study for the American Civil Rights movement and for examination of judicial review in regards to the United States Supreme Court.  By interpreting Amendment #14, through the prism of current civil and human rights issues, we will add a contemporary element to our study of Amendment #14. 

In short – the full comprehension of Amendment #14 is vital to this course.  So know it!
