The Declaration of Independence

Above, the dramatic recreation of the vote for Independence in the HBO mini-series John Adams. Below the official trailer for the movie.  

Below, a series of podcasts that should help you better understand the meaning of the Declaration of Independence. Each is between two and four minutes long.   The Declaration document (and subsequent podcasts) are broken into an Introduction – seven individual stanza’s – and a Conclusion.  The layout corresponds with the required memorization of the Declaration.  Please go here to find the color coded copy of the document.

Civil Rights Selma 1965 – Mr. Wood’s Repeat Photography 2003

The assignment you are asked to do below will familiarize you with the  events of Selma, Alabama in 1965.

Go here for PDF copy of Mr. Wood’s 2003 tour through the Southern Civil Rights sights.  It provides a story not only of Selma, but other pertinent people and places along the way.  The Selma story however, is significant in that it brings the idea of Repeat Photography to the scene.

Calling Congress 101

  • Friday 1/30        3:30 to 4:30 PM
  • Saturday 1/31   11:00 to 1:00 PM
  • Sunday 2/1       11:00 to 1:00 PM

If you intend to get involved in holding your governmental officials accountable, then you must to do more than just vote.  You need to read and make yourself aware of issues of the day.  You need to write your elected representatives and let them know that you are watching and listening.  Finally, call them.  Put their numbers in your cell phone, and make it a regular occurrence that when an issue comes up that you really care about – you get on the horn and give your Congressman a call.

There are several things to remember when you call, the most important of which is – any call is a good call.  Don’t be AFRAID.  If you screw up – who cares.  Hang up and try again.  Like anything else the more you do this, the better you’ll get.  So lets pick up the phone – and get a dialing.
